Core presents ‘Antigone’ at The Roper!

Government, God, and Civil Disobedience…
Core is bringing a modern take to an ancient classic for 3 Performances Only!13925492_10208678624716005_3963203639555426116_oDon’t miss this timeless Greek tale presented in an alternate America reality.

As modern Americans, how easy it is for us to take for granted our collective power! How second nature it is that, through the political process, we have both the right and the responsibility to judge if our leaders are protecting the rights that we ourselves have declared “inalienable. ”

These rights were hard won of a bitter war against tyranny, injustice and oppression. Such rebellions against authority, both governmental and familial, have largely defined world history and propelled literature. Antigone, the archetypal story of a young woman’s anguished quest to bury her fallen brother, resonates no less powerfully now than it did 2,500 years ago. It demands of us, as it did of audiences in antiquity, this fundamental question: what costs are acceptable in the pursuit of justice?

This production takes place in the Roper’s special Studio/Stage configuration, in which you are never more than inches from the action. Extremely limited seating is available and performances will sell out.

The production will begin promptly at the time on your ticket. Latecomers will not be seated.

Friday Night Frights is back in Portsmouth!

This year’s Friday Night Frights in Portsmouth will feature two productions from Core!

October 10th @ 7:00pm: THE POE PROJECT, AN EVENING OF EDGAR ALLAN POE is back by popular demand from last year’s sold out performance.

The Poe Project is a montage of original adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s works exploring rhythm, imagery, and sounds prevalent in his short stories and poems. Works include The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, Cask of Amontillado, The Bells, and Anabelle Lee among others. Rather than a standard re-telling or recitation of his words, we celebrate his work by transforming them into choral voice, alternative sound, and movement. Run time: 45 minutes.

Love lives in dreams; guilt thrives in nightmares.

The infamous murder case of Lizzie Borden has intrigued America for over one hundred years and is still considered “one of the most diabolical crimes that was ever committed.” Andrew and Abby Borden’s were found axed to death; their daughter Lizzie was arrested and charged mere days later. The case was surrounded with a passionately divided public. Feminists rallied for her, misogynists scoffed at the notion, and the prosecution while showboating their case to prove her guilt, lacked true evidence. Ultimately, Lizzie was acquitted, but whether guilty or innocent, there is always a price to pay. Secrets may be taken to the grave, but they haunt the living and always seem to reside in that place between awake and sleep. Run time: 50 minutes.
