“Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks
And when she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty-one”
The Lizzie Borden case has intrigued for over one hundred years and is still considered “one of the most dastardly and diabolical crimes that was ever committed in Massachusetts. In the quiet of the home, in the broad daylight, on the street of a popular city, with houses within a stone’s throw, nay, almost touching, who could have done it?” Andrew and Abby Borden’s bodies were found axed to death in their home in August 1892. Mere days after the murders, daughter Lizzie was arrested and charged. The case was surrounded with a passionately divided public. The opinion of women and their capabilities fueled debate concerning her guilt or innocence. Ultimately due to circumstantial evidence and incompetent prosecution, Lizzie was acquitted of all charges.
Guilty or innocent, there is always a price one must pay. Secrets may be kept to the grave, but they haunt the living until the death bell rings. CORE Theatre Ensemble is bringing the tale of Lizzie Borden to life in nightmarish proportions.
