We will be performing with other amazing groups from Belgium, Portugal, Lithuania, Puerto Rico, Romania and of course the impressive groups from Santiago! Here we go 2014!
Come join us for a wonderful evening of storytelling featuring Core’s performances of some of Edgar Allan Poe’s greatest pieces in Downtown Portsmouth’s Historic District!
In the depths of the Old Courthouse Annex, built in 1843 just years before Poe’s death, The Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center is giving Core’s cast of four full reign to take you seamlessly through Poe’s wonderfully macabre worlds of The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell Tale Heart, The Raven, The Bells and Annabel Lee in The Poe Project.
With Laura Agudelo, Edwin Castillo, Emel Ertugrul, and Alba Woolard, The Poe Project has been described as story theatre at its best. The Poe Project has been performed locally to rave reviews, as well as internationally at the 13th annual Les Fêtes Théâtrales du Suroît in Quebec, the 27th annual Rencontres Internationales de Théâtre Universitaire in Liege, Belgium, and the 13th annual International Theatre Forum in Vilnius, Lithuania where it won recognition for Best Actress (Emel Ertugrul) and Best of Show (The Bells).

The Little Theatre of Norfolk and CORE Theatre Ensemble welcome guest artist Giacomo Gamba from Brescia, Italy for the American premiere performances of his surreal masterpieces Oxus-Gennan amp; Sgòrbypark for two evenings only June 21 and 22 at 8:00pm.
Oxus-Gennan follows two characters, X and Y, working their life at the Machine. Pale and blue veined, they work away as usual, collecting and processing oxygen in a world filled with pollution until… today. Something is different inside Y. What is life bound to a machine?
Sgòrbypark follows two ex-members of secret organizations that underwent all kinds of experiments before, during, and after their missions. They were used for the worst purposes in the name of progress, and now they are just two human beings without definite identities. Rubbish in a collapsing world, they are lost and left alone in Sgòrbypark. In a hallucinated trip, the two live again in the old missions and explore the dark side of their souls to discover what little humanity is still there in order to live.
Moving and human, both these pieces are surreal in laughter and sadness. Oxus-Gennan and Sgòrbypark are two worlds in which the characters question what it is to live. Oxus-Gennan will be presented by CORE Theatre Ensemble starring Lindsey Wyda-Cole and Matt Cole. Sgòrbypark will be presented by Centro di Creazione Teatrale starring Giacomo Gamba and Laura Mantovi.
Performances are Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 8:00pm at the Little Theatre of Norfolk, 801 Claremont Ave. A reception to meet the artists will follow each evening! Tickets are $15 General Admission, $10 LTN Season Subscribers and are available at www.ltnonline.org

ONE NIGHT ONLY! On Sunday, May 5 @ 8pm at The Brick Theater in Brooklyn, CORE Theatre Ensemble presents the NYC premiere of 40 Whacks: a nightmare, an original performance piece based on Lizzie Borden.
Love lives in dreams; guilt lives in nightmares. CORE Theatre Ensemble presents their original theatrical piece based on the infamous tale of Lizzie Borden and the brutal ax murders of her parents for ONE NIGHT ONLY in the intimate space of The Brick Theater.
The Lizzie Borden case has intrigued America for over one hundred years and is still considered “one of the most dastardly and diabolical crimes that was ever committed.” Andrew and Abby Borden’s bodies were found axed to death in their home in August 1892; their daughter Lizzie was arrested and charged mere days later. The case was surrounded with a passionately divided public, and the opinion of women and their capabilities fueled debate concerning her guilt or innocence. Due to circumstantial evidence and incompetent prosecution, Lizzie was ultimately acquitted of all charges. Whether guilty or innocent, there is always a price to pay. Secrets may be taken to the grave, but they haunt the living until the death bell rings.
Debuted in Norfolk, VA in 2011 and toured to Quebec in 2012, 40 Whacks: a nightmare will travel to Lithuania immediately following the NYC premiere at The Brick Theater! Don’t miss it! Seating is limited. This show contains adult content.

It’s March, and we’ve bid a fond farewell (for now) to No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre. We’d like to thank Topher Jones for his magnificent guest appearance as the Valet, Patti Wray and The Venue on 35th for graciously hosting our production, and the wonderfully responsive audiences who packed the house during our three-night run.
Next we’ll begin rehearsing 40 Whacks: A Nightmare for its Lithuanian debut at the 14th Annual Universitetu Teatru Forumas in Vilnius in May. We’re excited to revisit the piece and bring some new friends along for the ride! We’re also really excited about beer towers and fried bread, but we digress.
For now, we’re going to catch our breath, celebrate some birthdays, and be thankful for the fact that we’re actually much nicer people than the three characters we just portrayed.
We'll be working with some old and new friends in the coming months, and we have some very exciting developments lined up: first of all, No Exit at The Venue on 35th February 28th-March 2nd! Then in May, we're taking 40 Whacks: A Nightmare to Lithuania! That's right, we're heading back to Eastern Europe! Get the fried bread ready.
We are also honored to be presenting the American premiere of Oxus Gennan by Giacomo Gamba this summer. We'll share more information about this in the coming months, but for now we are very excited to say that this wonderful playwright and generally delightful human being is coming from Italy this summer for a week of workshops and performances with CORE!
We told you 2013 was going to be big. But you know what? We still have even more tricks up our sleeve.
It’s official: We would like to welcome Chris Bernhardt as our Associate Managing Director! We have big plans for this year, and we are so excited to have him join our team!
Our next big announcement is that the lovely Laura Agudelo has been named VHSL Southeastern District Theater Director of the Year! Congratulations, Laura! We’re so proud of you!
And in case you hadn’t heard, CORE is Young Audiences of Virginia’s Ensemble of the the Year!
The cherry on top? You can now follow us on Twitter.
2013 is already amazing, and it’s only February. Just wait until you find out what else we’re cookin’ up.
“Two women and one man are locked up together for eternity.
The windows are bricked up, there are no mirrors, the electric lights can never be turned off, and there is no exit.
The irony of this hell is that its torture is not of the rack and fire but of the burning humiliation of each soul as it is stripped of its pretenses by the cruel curiosity of the damned.
Here the soul is shorn of secrecy, and even the blackest deeds are mercilessly exposed to the fierce light of hell.
It is an eternal torment.”
CORE Theatre Ensemble is bringing this Nobel Prize winning play to The Venue on 35th for 3 nights only.
Thursday, February 28 8pm
Friday, March 1 8pm
Saturday, March 2 8pm
After a brief respite over the holidays, we are once again forging ahead with our characteristic intensity. We have big plans for this year: new projects, new adventures, and lots of things that we can’t reveal just yet! You’ll just have to trust us…this is going to be an exciting year.
